Following Atticus

By Tom Ryan

One man, one miniature schnauzer, and forty-eight high peaks. This is the incredible story of Tom Ryan, and his loyal dog, Atticus M. Finch. Follow along as Tom recounts the winter that he and Atticus scaled the forty-eight high peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains twice (that’s right, twice). The pair set out on this unforgettable adventure to raise money for charity. Following Atticus is the quintessential wintertime pet read!

Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love

By Larry Levin

This is the story of a family with a truly remarkable dog. Before being adopted by Larry Levin’s family, Oogy was used as bait for fighting dogs. Rescued by police, he was taken to a local veterinarian. There, he found Larry Levin and his family. Despite suffering unthinkable animal abuse and having a disfigured face as a result, Oogy is an unconditionally loving companion to Larry and his twin sons. The book details Larry’s relationship with Oogy and the way this persevering pup helped heal his human’s emotional wounds.

The Call of the Wild

By Jack London

If adventure is what you crave, this one’s a classic! Published in 1903, this is the tale of a dog named Buck. Stolen from his home and forced to be a sled dog in Alaska, Buck must learn to adapt to his new surroundings in order to survive. If you’ve ever wanted to get inside the mind of a dog, this is a fascinating read. The whole story is written from Buck’s perspective! Keep in mind that this book does contain depictions of animal abuse that may upset some readers.

A Dog’s Purpose

By W. Bruce Cameron

You might recognize this title because it was recently adapted into a 2017 movie. The tagline for this book is, “Every dog happens for a reason.” Everyone is born with a purpose, including the canine hero of this book! A Dog’s Purpose is the journey of one dog who lives four lives as a result of reincarnation. In each of his lives, he searches for his purpose while making friendships with the humans he meets along the way. If you’re looking for a heart-warming read to keep you cozy on a cold winter’s night, then this is the book for you! If you enjoy this book, we have good news for you! Cameron wrote a sequel, A Dog’s Journey, as well as another book for the series called The Dogs of Christmas. Plus, you can watch the movie once you’re done reading too. Looks like your winter reading plans are set!
